Mount Rainier, Washington

A massive active stratovolcano located in Washington state. On June 24, 1947, civilian pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine shining, crescent-shaped objects flying past Mount Rainier at speeds exceeding 1,200 miles per hour. His description of the objects moving 'like a saucer if you skip it across the water' led to the media coining the term 'flying saucer,' effectively launching the modern UFO era.
