An Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), commonly known as a drone, encompasses the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a ground-based controller, and the system of communications connecting the two. In contemporary UAP investigations, UAS are a primary focus, as many modern sightings by military and civilian pilots are suspected to be advanced, classified, or commercial drones. Distinguishing between conventional UAS and truly anomalous UAP is a central challenge for organizations like AARO.
A major focal point in modern UAP investigations, as advanced drones frequently account for contemporary sightings and range-fouling incidents.
